A classical term for what is now referred to as 'Sunni' Islam, denoting adherence to the belief of [[Abu Bakr]] as the Prophet's first successor. Historically, some [[Some 'Sunni' scholars refer to themselves as bakrite|'Sunni' scholars]] referred to themselves as _bakrite_, and some [[Shia scholars who made use of the term 'bakrite'|Shia scholars]] used the term as well. [[Sheikh al-Habib]] argues that it is Islamically impermissible to refer to Bakrite Islam as Sunni citing the lack of use of such a term by the Prophet and his family (peace be upon them) across two and a half centuries. Despite living among a Bakrite majority, the Prophet’s family referred to them as _[[mukhalifun]]_ or _[['ammah]]_. He also states that Sunni implies adherence to the _[[sunnah]]_ of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), while Shia Islam asserts _bakrite_ Islam opposes the _sunnah_, making the term misleading.
